Company Information : History

Adaptive technology is one of the twentieth century's biggest and most spectacular miracles. The evolution of adaptive technology took place over a very short period of time, which made it quite overwhelming for consumers and producers alike. One of the biggest obstacles that adaptive technology faced during its evolution was the fast pace of the computer revolution and the fact that it had to keep up with it. Nearly everyday, a new application or concept is designed which defies all of the previously established standards which adaptive technology had to rely upon. As a result consumers had a hard time finding the right products that will meet their needs, and producers were out of touch with consumers.

In 1989, and in the midst of these circumstances, Jim Misener, a blind businessman from Denver, Colorado was searching for equipment to help him in his daily life and his business. Needless to say, Jim had to go through what every blind consumer went through at the time, namely having to find answers to questions such as what products are available, and whether they will satisfy his needs. After a long struggle, Jim was able to put together a reading system consisting of a scanner and a personal computer that he used to accomplish his daily work.

Having realized how much a blind person has to go through to get the right adaptive products, Jim decided to turn his unfortunate experience into a business devoted to giving the blind consumer a choice of products, and most importantly, the knowledge with which that choice could be rightly made; that business was later to be known as Beyond Sight.

Since its inception, Beyond Sight quickly gained a reputation in the area not only as a place where adaptive technology was purchased, but also as a place where people can get educated about adaptive technology. Although most of Beyond Sight's products consisted of high-tech computers, speech synthesizers, and systems that allow a blind person to read printed material, the shelves in Jim's small home office also included little items such as talking clocks and calculators.

A few years later, and after Beyond Sight's reputation transcended the borders of Colorado, Jim decided to pursue his dream of a one-stop-shop for the blind and visually impaired, a place where a person can walk in and buy anything they need, but most of all, look at it and try it out before they buy it. After a lot of thinking and a great deal of hard work, and with the help and support of his wife Cindy, Jim managed to move out of his basement into a store which made the dream of a one-stop-shop for the blind and visually impaired come true.
